Mandarin Offered As a Foreign Language
The Marathon School Board has recently committed to continuing Chinese as a foreign language for the next two years.  With this announcement we have opened up registration at the high school for these classes.  Due to the fact that Chinese will be offered for two years students can take this as an option to fulfill a college high school foreign language requirement. With the rise of China on the worldwide economic stage this is an excellent opportunity for Marathon Students. If you are interested in this as a possibility incoming freshman please contact Mrs. Pilgrim at MAES, Ms. Globensky at St. Mary’s or Jim Allmann at MHS (443-2226 x-136).

Our current Chinese teacher Ms. Yu Jie is returning to Beijing, China this summer and the district is expecting another teacher from China in the fall prior to school starting.  We are looking for a family that may be interested in an international experience by hosting the new teacher for 1 year.  Mr. Beranek, High School Principal, and his family are currently hosting Ms. Yu and would be happy to answer any questions that you may have about the experience.  For more information just contact Mr. Dave Beranek at the high school 443-226 x-106.

  Transfer Opportunities at NTC

For students considering a bachelor’s degree after high school, college choices are endless. Starting at NTC and transferring upon completion of an associate’s degree makes for an affordable option to begin your learning journey. The NTC Transfer website provides an excellent tool for students considering this option. Visit ntc.edu/transferinfo to find out where you can go after NTC, searching by college or NTC program.
NTC’s General Studies Transfer Certificate is another option for students to get started on a degree closer to home—at all of NTC’s regional campuses.  The General Studies Transfer Certificate, in partnership with UW-Marathon County, allows a student to take their first year of coursework at NTC, the second at UW-MC, and transfer on to other four-year colleges.
For more information on NTC transfer agreements, contact your Career Coach or Xang Lee, NTC’s Transfer Specialist.

Target Take Charge of Education
As part of Take Charge of Education donation, Target is awarding Marathon School District with a check. This payout is a direct result of the parents, teachers and school supporters who participate in the program.
Through Take Charge of Education, families, teachers and members of the community have an easy way to raise money for their school. When they sign up and designate an eligible K-12 school, Target donates up to 1% of every purchase they make with their REDcard or Target Check Card to that school. Take Charge of Education dollars are donated to schools twice a year. Over the past 11 years, school have used the funds for whatever they needed.

Marathon Athletic Club (MAC)
The MAC Club was established in 2001 to help provide financial support to all of the Marathon athletic programs. It allows our athletes to acquire equipment that would not be allowed by the school budget to help them be competitive.
We recently purchased toss back units for Basketball and indoor practice tees and nets for Golf. We also recently purchased a batting cage for girls Softball, to be setup downtown at the village ball diamond. All of the youth baseball teams will be able to use it.
We are in the process of planning and preparing to host 4 tournaments for our 7th & 8th grade girls and boys basketball teams. By us hosting these tournaments each team is allowed 3 free tournaments, and we gain income from admissions and concession sales. We are lucky to have a school with 2 gyms to allow this to happen.
The MAC Club meets the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 at the Marathon Bowling Center. Come, join the fun and help our schools athletic programs. If you are interested in receiving agendas and minutes form our meetings please email.

Distance Learning Lab
Twelve Junior and Senior students at Marathon High School are taking advantage of course offerings through the Distance Learning Lab. Through interactive television students are taking high school courses offered at other high schools in the area and Technical College and University courses without ever having to leave Marathon High School. The courses range from a high school Computer Aided Design course offered through Granton High School to College level courses such as Medical Terminology offered through Northcentral Technical College and Introduction to Psychology and English Composition courses offered through the University of Wisconsin Marshfield Wood County campus.

As part of the Central Wisconsin Educational Telecommunications Network, Marathon, along with Athens, Edgar, Granton, Greenwood, Loyal, Neillsville, Owen-Withee, Spencer, and Stratford are able to offer their students courses from other districts in the Network and from School Districts in other Distance Learning networks in the state, that they cannot offer in their own Districts. In addition to the high school classes members of the network through cooperating agreements with Chippewa Valley Technical College, Mid-State Technical College, North Central Technical College, UW-Barron County, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Marshfield /Wood County, UW Stout, Western Technical College and Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College are able to offer college level classes to students for high school and college credit.

Besides teaching in a home room instructors are televised out to as many as six other high schools with video and audio hook-ups that permit student – teacher interaction just as if all students were in the instructor’s homeroom. In some of the courses exams, quizzes, and homework are sent via mail, many of the courses are utilizing other technologies such as e-mail and blackboard to send work back and forth.

The Distance Learning Lab is also being utilized for Field trips for grades K through 12, teacher in-service, and short educational presentations such as ACT Study classes for students preparing to take College Admissions tests.

For more information on the Distance Learning Lab or to take a tour of it when it is being utilized please contact
Jim Allmann or David Beranek at 443-2226.
