Initially, MVA students took part in creating our C.R.E.W. character traits which are compassion, respect, effort, and with quality. Throughout their experience at MVA, students recognize the importance of living these traits and growing in these traits in all areas of our school. Norms are established in CREW, core classes, and during community meetings. This intentional focus on character results in a positive culture and climate at MVA that is visible in many of our students' reflections. One reflection, from a new student who immigrated to Marathon from Mexico this year, stands out. In the passage, she shares how MVA students welcomed her into their community and how, throughout her time at MVA, she demonstrated growth in her character as well.
While giving her 8th grade exit portfolio presentation, this female student explained well how her peers’ character had a dramatic impact on her life. At the beginning of the school year the student had immigrated to the United States speaking limited English. Her peer group at MVA spoke very limited Spanish, her native language. She explained, “I have known them [8th grade peers] a little but at that time I have realized that they are incredible people, they are very good at sports, and they are very funny, I thank them because they treated me like one of them and because with all of you I found another family. I realized that I am important to you. Sometimes I think it was a mistake to come here [to the United States] with nothing, just a suitcase with thoughts, full of illusions, but although I would have loved to have known them [8th grade peers] for a long time ago, After this experience, I learned to value my parents, I learned that you do not need money or luxuries to be happy, and I believe that if I had not taken this giant step in my life I would not yet learn that the value of happiness can not be bought. I will remember as a year full of surprises, learning experiences and the most important, I will remember this year like a base for my future.”
