Counselors routinely use the following activities in their work:
1. One-to-One Counseling
This activity deals with personal issues of the student--exploring ideas, feelings, and behaviors, particularly as they relate to the student's learning and success in school. An additional focus of this activity is the student's Personal Learning Plan, which links the student's strengths/weaknesses, interests, and values to the post-high-school options most appealing to him/her, and helps the student see how present performance in school affects the options available after high school.
2. Group Counseling
Groups exist for discussing concerns, sharing ideas, resolving conflicts, remediating skills and problems, selecting and planning goals, and giving and receiving feedback. Sessions are designed to address students' needs in the areas of academic, career, and personal/social development.
3. Classroom Lessons/Presentations
Classroom lessons/presentations are used to disseminate information that is part of the school-counseling curriculum. Group interaction helps students develop interpersonal skills while learning the concepts and skills necessary to succeed in school, resolve conflict, make informed choices, and set life goals.
4. Consultation/Collaboration
Counselors consult and collaborate with teachers, other school staff, parents, and community members as partners in the lives of students. Consultation/Collaboration is a cooperative process that improves the skills and effectiveness of the team working with students individually and in groups.
5. Coordination of Programs and Services
Coordination is a leadership process in which the counselors organize and manage a school's counseling program and activities.
